REGULATION

& REPAIRS

The most common repairs will come under the category of regulation which simply means the fine tuning of the various mechanical components of a piano to optimise its playability and sound quality. If you suspect that your piano is not behaving as it should then regulation may be all it needs to bring it back to life and perform at its full potential. Regulation can return consistency of touch and linearity of response across all the keys, allowing for greater control and precision while playing. By adjusting components such as key height, key dip, and hammer alignment, regulation can eliminate inconsistencies in touch and tone, resulting in a more uniform and enjoyable playing experience. A well-regulated piano will produce a more balanced and refined sound, with improved dynamics and clarity.

Every piano is unique and each will have its own requirements to keep it at its best. Our technicians are fully trained in all aspects of repair and will come prepared with the tools and parts necessary to fix most problems on first visit. Some older pianos will need a little more attention and in such cases the working parts of the piano (the action) can be safely removed and taken to our workshop for restoration. In all cases our utmost aim is to provide the highest quality work at an affordable price so that your piano can be restored to its full potential.

FRENCH POLISHING

French polishing is a traditional technique for finishing wooden furniture, including pianos, which offers a range of exceptional benefits. When applied to a piano, French polishing not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also provides protection and longevity to the instrument. The process involves the application of numerous thin coats of shellac, applied by hand and polished to a high gloss finish. This method not only brings out the natural beauty of the wood but also creates a durable and resilient surface that safeguards against moisture, scratches and other forms of damage. French polishing allows for greater depth and richness in the piano’s tone, as the shellac finish resonates with the wood, enhancing the instrument’s acoustic properties. Beyond its functional benefits, French polishing also imbues the piano with a timeless elegance and sophistication, making it a centrepiece in any room. Overall, by opting for French polishing, owners can ensure both the aesthetic appeal and condition of their piano for generations to come.
